Protecting Mountains. Mobilizing Youth. Strengthening Climate Resilience.
Save Mountain is a youth-led initiative from Nepal working to bring greater attention to mountains, glaciers and the communities living with climate change. We connect awareness, education, youth action, credible research and collaboration to help keep mountain issues visible in local and global climate conversations.
Why Mountains Matter to Everyone
Mountains are not isolated landscapes. They store and release freshwater, support biodiversity, sustain livelihoods and connect high-altitude ecosystems with communities far downstream. As glaciers retreat, snow patterns change and climate risks increase, protecting mountain environments becomes a question of water security, resilience and human wellbeing.
2 Billion People
Depend on mountain waters for their lives and livelihoods.

55-60%
of global annual freshwater flows come from mountains.

Glacier Loss Is Accelerating
ICIMOD reported in 2026 that Hindu Kush Himalayan glaciers are losing ice at roughly twice the rate observed around the year 2000.

Our Work for Mountain Climate Action
Mountain & Glacier Awareness
We translate credible information about glaciers, mountain ecosystems, water and climate risks into accessible campaigns, stories and educational content.
Read MoreYouth & Community Climate Action
We create ways for young people and communities to participate in mountain advocacy, volunteering, climate communication and locally relevant action.
Read MoreResearch, Education & Advocacy
We connect scientific evidence with public understanding and climate dialogue, helping mountain issues reach students, communities, institutions and decision-making spaces.
Read MoreClimate Change Doesn't Stop at the Glacier
A changing mountain climate can trigger consequences far beyond snow and ice. Changes in glaciers, snowfall and rainfall influence water and hazards. Floods, droughts and unstable water supplies can damage homes, infrastructure, farms and local economies. When households repeatedly lose income and assets, climate risk can become a development and human-security issue.
WARMING
Rising temperatures change snow, glaciers, permafrost and mountain ecosystems.
WATER & HAZARDS
Glacier retreat, changing snowmelt, glacial lakes and extreme rainfall can alter river flows and increase certain flood, landslide and GLOF risks.
HOMES & LIVELIHOODS
Damage to agriculture, roads, bridges, hydropower, tourism, homes and local services can reduce income and economic security.
POVERTY & DISPLACEMENT
Repeated losses can push vulnerable households deeper into poverty, increase food and water insecurity and contribute to migration or displacement.
SOCIAL PRESSURE
Inequality, unemployment, resource pressure and displacement can create additional stress in communities already facing economic or institutional challenges.
HUMAN SECURITY
Where governance is weak and existing grievances or conflict are present, climate pressures can compound instability. These outcomes are not automatic: climate change acts as a risk multiplier rather than a single cause of violence.
Climate impacts do not automatically lead to conflict or extremism. Economic conditions, governance, inequality, political exclusion, institutions and existing tensions strongly influence outcomes.
